Agriculture in The Philippines employs 42% of the working population and accounts for more than 20% of the GDP. The agricultural growth (2.7% in 1997) has weakened slightly compared to the previous year (3.7%). The agricultural results have been affected by the decline in volume of the rice-growing production in a 5.9 %, the fall of the sugar cane production (-3.6 %) and the negative results of the forest sector (-14.2 %). Reforms are still expected in this sector which remains affected by climatic hazards as in many other countries.
