The contribution of agriculture sector to the economy of Malta is low due to the climatic and geological difficulties faced by the country. Agriculture constitutes only 2.3% to its GDP and employs only 1.7% of country's active population (as against an average of 4.3% in the European Union). Nearly 75% of the island's food requirements are met through import of the agricultural products.
The main crops are vegetables which include potatoes and cereals. Cattle and pig raising constitute a major part of the agricultural activity.
