Hello International Traders!

South Korea's economy keeps perking along, and in this issue I profile a site that will help you become a part of this Asian success story. Next, I have a site with useful demographic statistics from the World Bank. And, if you'd like tariff information that's easy to look up for a host of countries, I have just the site for you. Finally, I have a profile of one of the premier sites on the Web for finding magazine articles.

If you'd like more information about international trade, go to FITA's International Trade/ Import-Export Portal ( http://fita.org ), an excellent source for trade leads, news, events, and a link library of 7,000 sites related to international trade.

SOUTH KOREA -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY

South Korea is one of the true success stories of the last four decades. In the 1960s the country had a GDP comparable to some of the world's poorest countries, but now, 40 years later, it has boosted its economy to European Union levels, and in 2004 it joined the trillion dollar club of world economies. In 2004 South Korea exported US $250 billion and imported US $214 billion, and prospects remain good on the trade front. If you'd like to learn more about South Korea, go to the U.S. Commercial Service Korea Page ( http://www.buyusa.gov/korea/en/ ). Click on "Doing Business in Korea" and you'll find reports on current market conditions and upcoming opportunities; detailed reports on Korean industries; information on the best prospects for exporting to Korea; a country commercial guide; a list of trade events; and more. The site is oriented toward U.S. companies, but there's plenty of good information here no matter what country you're from. Oh, and click on "Useful Links" for even more information.

And FITA's Global Trade Book Store has a many books about doing business in South Korea. Check out especially South Korea (Culture Shock!), Business Korea: A Practical Guide to Understanding South Korean Business Culture, South Korea: Ultimate Business Guide, and Doing Business with South Korea.

There are many more links to Korea at the FITA site. Go to FITA's International Trade Web Resources at http://fita.org/webindex/index.html, click on Regional Resources then go to Asia and click on Korea in the drop-down box. Or simply type "Korea" in the search box at http://www.fita.org.

WORLD BANK DATA AND STATISTICS

The World Bank is an organization that collects economic data about countries, and its Data and Statistics page ( http://www.worldbank.org/data/countryclass/classgroups.htm ) groups countries according to their level of income and indebtedness, with categories from low to high income, and severely indebted to less indebted. It's a great way to get a snapshot of a country's economy. There are links on this page to more useful information (Quick Reference, Maps, etc.), some of which is free, and some fee-based.

APEC TARIFF DATABASE

A reader wrote to say that "it's easy to find U.S. tariff rates, but what about rates between China or Argentina, say, on agricultural products?" I searched in the FITA Web Resources database ( http://www.fita.org/webindex/index.html ) and found the APEC Tariff Database ( http://www.apectariff.org/ ). This Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation site has a database with tariff information for 21 countries, covering dozens of products. You must register to use the database, but registration is free.

FINDARTICLES

As a parent of four children, I spend a lot of time in dentist's and doctor's waiting rooms. I read a lot of magazines there, and if I don't get to finish an interesting article, I know I can come home and look it up on FindArticles ( http://www.findarticles.com ). FindArticles claims it has 5 million magazine articles in its database, many of which are not found on any other search engine. You can search by keyword, or browse the magazines by category (Automotive, Business & Finance, Sports, etc.). You can also keep up with new articles in your field by browsing "Hot New Articles By Topic". Some articles are free, and others link to the magazine's Web site, where you'll be asked to pay a fee to view the article.
