Hello International Traders! France has a thriving economy and lots of opportunities for
trade, and I've got a site in this issue that will help you make
inroads in the French market. Also, I found a site with import
regulations for many of the world's major economies. Need to find
some medical answers? I have a medical search engine that will
help you find the right ones. Finally, I have a site that gives
you practical information about tipping around the world.
If you'd like more information about international trade, go to FITA's
International Trade/ Import-Export Portal ( http://fita.org ), an excellent
source for trade leads, news, events, and a link library of 7,000 sites related
to international trade.
| FRANCE -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY
The people of France love marketplaces. To name just one example,
the Les Halles marketplace in Paris has been around for more than
800 years. France is very active in the international
marketplace, too, with imports and exports both in the US $419
billion range in 2004. If you'd like to research trade with
France, go to Export Minnesota's France page (
http://www.exportminnesota.com/links/france.htm ). This is a
great starting point for your research, with links to country
profiles, trade statistics, business directories, trade leads,
French government sites, news, cultural information, and much
more.
And FITA's Global
Trade Book Store has a many books about doing business in France. Check out
especially Doing Business With France, France (Culture Shock!) and Passport France: Your Pocket Guide to French Business, Customs & Etiquette.
The French-American Chamber of Commerce chapters in the US are members of FITA. Look at their websites: Los Angeles, Atlanta, New Orleans, Charlotte, Dallas, Denver, Chicago, Boston, New York, Houston and Washington, DC.

IMPORT REGULATIONS OF MAJOR COUNTRIES
Many readers indicated on our recent survey that they'd like more
information about trade regulations and standards for different
countries. Here's a site I found that has lots of useful
information -- Import Regulations of Major Countries (
http://sme.tdctrade.com/ir/index.htm ). This page at the Hong
Kong Trade Development Council site has information about import
requirements for China, the U.S., the EU, Canada, Japan, and
Australia. There are also links to the Customs Department sites
for the various countries, where you can get further information.

SPIDER NEVI
When someone in my family has a medical problem, I always make
sure I research it on the Web. That's because there's so much
medical information on the Web that everyone can be an informed
patient. Now there's a new resource to use. It's called Spider
Nevi ( http://www.spidernevi.com ), and it's a search engine
that helps you find medical tutorials. The Web site says that
Spider Nevi is "a non- commercial volunteer project started by a
group of doctors from the UK and India, and its main purpose is
to provide a free human-edited tutorials directory to the medical
fraternity". Don't be scared off by the focus on doctors, however
-- most lay people can easily understand these articles. Just
type in a search word, and you'll get a list of articles about
that subject, with symptoms, treatment, drug information, links
to other articles and experts in the field, and plenty more.
TIPPING PAGE AT THE BBC's "h2g2"
It's hard to know when to tip, especially if you're traveling in
a foreign country. Some people don't tip at all, some tip too
much, and I've even heard of movie stars who solve the problem by
giving out autographed pictures of themselves as tips. For a fun
and informative guide to tipping around the world, go to the
Tipping Page at the BBC's "h2g2 - the unconventional Guide to Life, the Universe and Everything." (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A640018). You'll learn something useful at this site, with practical
advice like whether you should tip a waiter in New Zealand (only
on the rare occasions when the bill says, "Service not
included"), to whether you should tip a buggy driver in Egypt
(yes).
