Hello International Traders!

There's a big future for trade with India, and if you want a part of that, I've got just the site for you -- the new FITA Mini Portal to India, which has tons of information to help you. Then, I found a site where you can learn a language, or just a few handy phrases, right at your computer. And, whether you're going to the grocery store, or all the way across the U.S., I have a site that will show you the best route to take. Finally, I have a site with all the basic definitions and explanations of international trade terms.

INDIA -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY

India has the fourth largest economy in the world, a growing population that is fluent in English and highly educated, and a government that is easing controls on private investment and trade. Many companies see India as a market with as much potential as China. If you'd like to research opportunities for trade with this growing country, go to the new India Mini Portal ( http://fita.org/countries/india.html ), which is one of the new features at the FITA Web site. The Mini Portal is a good place to start your research. There is an overview of the country, with facts about the language, currency, climate, etc., plus more specific information about the economy, Indian markets, taxes, labor market indicators, tips on doing business in India, and a search engine to help you find free market research on the Internet. There's also a news feed with the latest Indian news.

Click on "Useful Links" and you'll find a variety of sources for market research, trade leads, business directories, logistics, government contacts, travel, financing, and lots more.

One of the links I found was the Australian government's India Trade Profile ( http://www.austrade.gov.au/australia/layout/0,,0_S2-1_CLNTXID0019 -2_-3_PWB184136-4_-5_-6_-7_,00.html ), which is a good complement to FITA's India Mini Portal.

The India Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at the newly redesigned FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other regions or countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page ( http://www.fita.org/).

FITA's Global Trade Book Store has many excellent books about doing business in India. Check out India Business: Finding Opportunities in This Big Emerging Market, Culture Shock! Succeed in Business: India, and Doing Business in India among others. And the National US India Chamber of Commerce is a FITA member association. Check out thier website at http://www.nuicc.org.

BBC LANGUAGES

My wife speaks fluent French, so when we traveled to Paris years ago she did all the talking (actually, that happens pretty much anywhere). The few times she left me alone, however, I fumbled my way through conversations using my rusty high school French. I wish the BBC Languages ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/ ) site was around then, because I could have used it. BBC Languages has the practical tools you need to communicate in another language, whether you need just a few phrases to get by, or you want a higher level of fluency. There are online courses with broadband video; BBC films and documentaries; audio magazines; a Spanish language soap opera; and more. You can find instruction in French, German, Italian, and Spanish, with shorter courses in Chinese, Portugese, and Greek. Click on "Holiday Blunders" for some hilarious stories of misunderstandings caused by poor language skills.

AIB TRADE FINANCE

Every industry has its language, and international trade is no different. There's a whole host of terms that pertain to trade, and anyone who wants to succeed in the business should be familiar with them. AIB Trade Finance ( http://www.aibtradefinance.com/tf/home.asp ) is a site to bookmark, because it has useful definitions of trade terms. If you want to learn the difference between a performance bond and a bid bond, simply click on "Glossary", and you'll find it. There are in-depth explanations of bills of exchange and trade insurance, plus trade documents you can download. Finally, there are some case histories that will show you practical solutions to problems you may encounter in international trade. And don't foget to check out the new FITA International Trade Finance Mini-Portal at http://fita.org/trade_finance.html.

NATIONAL TRAFFIC AND ROAD CLOSURE INFORMATION

I recently moved to a different part of my home state, and I'm still finding my way around the highways and byways, learning the fastest routes for getting where I want to go. Now that I've found the National Traffic and Road Closure Information ( http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo/ ) site I'll be able to plan my trips better. This U.S. Department of Transportation site has information about traffic conditions, road construction, and public transit systems for all 50 states. The link for my state has: information about current and planned construction projects; a highway construction advisory map; real-time traffic information; travel advisories; and more.

For outside the U.S., I found GetMeThere.co.uk ( http://www.getmethere.co.uk ), which has street maps, route planners, and driving conditions for the UK and Europe.
