Hello International Traders! Central Asia and the Caucasus is a region of great change, but
great opportunity also. If you want to research trade with these
countries, I have a perfect Web site where you can start. I also
found a site with country profiles and other useful tools that's
worth checking out. The U.S. government has millions of Web pages
-- and I profile the gateway site in this issue. Finally, if you
want to save time and search many health-oriented Web sites at
once, check out the site I found where you can do just that! And don't forget -- if you'd like more information about
international trade, go to FITA's Really Useful Links (
http://fita.org/webindex/index.html ), which has a link library
of more than 8,000 sites related to international trade.
| CENTRAL ASIA AND THE CAUCASUS -- OUR FEATURED REGION
The region of Central Asia and the Caucasus comprises many
countries with many types of political and economic situations.
Although there has been turmoil in the region, there is also a
sense of great opportunity as these countries, some of which had
state-run economies until recently, adapt to the world
marketplace. EurasiaNet.org ( http://eurasianet.org ) is a
gateway to information about these countries, and it is a good
site to bookmark. Here you'll find articles and information about
eleven countries, from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan. The economies
range from Mongolia, which depends on herding and agriculture, to
Turkey, which has a multi-dimensional modern economy. Click on a
country in the left column, then a topic in the right column.
You'll find news and information, human rights updates, maps and
statistics, travel links, government agencies, business contacts,
media links, public health sites, and more.
If you go to the FITA Country Profiles page (
http://fita.org/countries/index.html ), you'll find more
resources to help you research these countries. Just click on a
country, and you'll find: an overview of the country, with facts
about the language, currency, climate, etc., plus more specific
information about the economy, markets, taxes, labor market
indicators, tips on doing business, a news feed, and a search
engine to help you find market research on the Internet.
Click on "Useful Links" on each country profile and you'll find a variety of sources for
market research, trade leads, business directories, logistics,
government contacts, travel, financing, and lots more.
And FITA's Global Trade Book Store offers Central Asia's Second Chance, a book that offers extensive insight into the current situation in the area.

ECRAT.COM
Here's a new site that I think you'll like. Ecrat.com (
http://www.ecrat.com ), which calls itself
"Today's Bureaucrat and Assistant for Business & International
Aid" has some useful features. Click on "Country Information",
and you'll find links to country profiles, demographics,
infrastructure, corruption indexes, cultural etiquette,
government agencies, public health, human rights, trade
agreements, and more. Click on "Tools & Resources" and you'll
find links to calculators, calendars, dictionaries, translation
sites, and government portals, to name a few.

FIRSTGOV
I don't know if there's a ranking of the largest Web sites by
organization, but if there is, the U.S. government has to be near
the top. There are millions of pages on U.S. government sites,
and it could get bewildering if not for FirstGov (
http://www.firstgov.gov ), the gateway to U.S. government sites.
On FirstGov, you can search federal and state government Web
sites, plus the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. Most
of these pages are not available on commercial Web sites, so
FirstGov is the place to start if you're looking for this kind of
information. Businesses will want to click on the "Businesses and
Nonprofits" tab, then click on "Information by Topic" to find
what you're looking for. You can also search FirstGov by keyword,
or just browse -- you can find links for everything from renewing
your driver's license to buying earth-moving equipment at this
site!

weight, or take care of some nagging health problem in 2006,
you'll find lots of information to help you on the Web. There are
quite a few health-oriented Web sites, where you can research
everything from a life-threatening medical problem to remedies
for the common cold. Now there's a site, called Healthline (
http://www.healthline.com ), that lets you search multiple
health sites at once. Just type in your search term, click
"Health Search", and you're off. You'll find answers from the
Mayo Clinic, Merck Manual, National Cancer Institute, and many
other reputable sites. You can also click on "Browse Health
