Hello International Traders! Botswana has had years of stable growth and a vibrant economy,
and many companies are looking to expand into this African
success story. I've got two sites in this issue that will help
you research opportunities with Botswana. If you want health data
for countries worldwide, I have the perfect site for you. Need to
know the ins and outs of exporting? I have a U.S. government site
that's just the ticket. Finally, if you want to connect to world
media sites with the click of a mouse, I have a site that will
let you do that. And don't forget -- if you'd like more information about
international trade, go to FITA's Really Useful Links (
http://fita.org/webindex/index.html ), which has a link library
of more than 8,000 sites related to international trade.
| BOTSWANA -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY
Successful businesspeople are good at finding markets others have
overlooked. Botswana, a small country in Southern Africa, could
be that market for your company. Botswana is an African success
story, a country that has maintained one of the world's highest
economic growth rates for 40 years, since it became independent
in 1966. A stable, civilian government and sound fiscal policies
have transformed Botswana from a poor country to a middle-income
one, and it was recently ranked as the best credit risk in
Africa.
If you'd like to learn more about Botswana, go to The Republic of
Botswana ( http://www.gov.bw/home.html ) site, where you'll find
an overview of the country's history and current situation, plus
links to government ministries.
A good site to search for Botswana information is MBendi (
http://www.mbendi.co.za ), a search engine specific to Africa.
Just type "Botswana" in the search box at the top of the page,
and you'll find links to reports and information about aspects of
Botswana's economy.
And, don't forget the resources at FITA. You can find more
information by typing "Botswana" in the search box at the top of
the FITA ( http://www.fita.org ) main page.
TRADE INFORMATION CENTER
I've written about U.S. Department of Commerce sites before, but
here's a gem I found that condenses lots of useful information in
one place. The Trade Information Center (
http://www.trade.gov/td/tic/ ) has links to information that U.S.
(and other) exporters will find valuable, including: country and
regional trade statistics; trade agreements; tariff and import
fees by country; worldwide trade events listings; industry-
specific information on U.S. exports; explanations of free trade
agreements; exporting guides; trade leads; and much more.

CFARES
http://www.cfares.com
The travel industry has gone through radical transformation over the
past five years because of the Internet, where consumers will book $75B
in travel this year. Currently, a large majority of US Internet travel
searches and bookings are for domestic flights even though 30 to 40% of
all US air travel is to international destinations. Why?
Unlike domestic flights where airline inventory is stored in four large
Global Distribution Systems (GDS's) which are accessible to all travel
search sites and agencies, 40 to 50% of all international tickets are
purchased by individual, wholesale consolidators. Consolidators
negotiate deeply discounted fares with the airlines by guaranteeing
certain volumes of ticket sales and then sell the tickets to large
affinity groups and retail travel agencies. To get the best pricing on
international flights, consumers need direct access to this consolidator
inventory.
Redwood Shores, California-based Cfares (www.cfares.com) is a leading
membership-based travel site offering precisely this service - real
time, web access to deeply-discounted international airfares not
generally available on traditional Internet travel sites. For your next,
US-originating international flights, check out Cfares and see how much
you might save! |

GLOBALHEALTHFACTS.ORG
Here's a site that will give you some quick numbers on world
health. GlobalHealthfacts.org (
http://globalhealthfacts.org ) has data on HIV/AIDS,
malaria, tuberculosis, avian flu, and other diseases, and you can
find it out with the click of a mouse. Just click on the map at
the home page, or type a country name in the search box, and
you'll get recent statistics. You can also stroll down and click
on topics (including Demography and the Economy) which will
compare countries for each topic. Its companion site,
GlobalHealthReporting.org ( http://www.globalhealthreporting.org
), is also useful for getting statistics about world health.
ABYZ NEWS LINKS
In an age of Web sites that play music, show movies, and do just
about everything except make dinner for you, I still like no-
frills sites. Give me a site that loads fast and has a simple,
clickable list of links, and I'll be happy. That's exactly what
you get with ABYZ News Links ( http://www.abyznewslinks.com ).
This site has lists of links to newspapers, news media, and news
sources worldwide, arranged by region and country. Looking for a
newspaper in Fiji? Just click on "Fiji" in the countries list,
and you'll get links to all the news media from that country,
with abbreviations to tell you what type of media (newspaper,
radio, etc.) it is, what language it's in, and what its focus
(alternative business, ethnic, general interest, etc.) is. Each
link will take you to the Web page for that media outlet.
