Hello International Traders! Uruguay is a stable, prosperous country in South America, and
I've got a site in this issue that will help you research
opportunities there. Also, I've got a site with survey data from
the World Bank on business conditions in 68 countries. Want to
cut your time and expense when trading with Singapore? I have a
site in this issue that will help you do that. Finally, I have a
portal that will keep you up to date with everything that's
happening in World Cup soccer. And don't forget -- if you'd like more information about
international trade, go to FITA's Really Useful Links (
http://fita.org/webindex/index.html ), which has a link library
of more than 8,000 sites related to international trade.
| URUGUAY -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY
Uruguay is a small country, but don't let its size fool you --
with its stable government, open financial markets, and well-
educated workforce it is one of the most prosperous countries on
the South American continent. A few years ago the country
suffered an economic downturn due to external factors, but it has
rebounded impressively, with a 10 percent growth rate in 2005, and
US $3.5 billion in imports and exports.
If you'd like to do some research on Uruguay, a good site to
visit is the Uruguay page at globalEDGE™ (
http://globaledge.msu.edu/ibrd/CountryIntro.asp?CountryID=
152&RegionID=4 ). This page has a rundown of the history,
government, and economy of Uruguay, with statistics and links to
other portal sites that profile the country. It's a good place to
start your research on this jewel of a country in South America.
Another good resource is the Uruguay Mini Portal (
http://fita.org/countries/uruguay.html), one of the new
features at the FITA site. The Mini Portal is a good place to
start your research. There is information about the language,
currency, climate, etc., plus more specific information about the
economy, Uruguay markets, taxes, labor market indicators, tips
on doing business, and a search engine to help you find market
research on the Internet.
Click on "Useful Links" and you'll find a variety of sources for
market research, trade leads, business directories, logistics,
government contacts, travel, financing, and lots more.
The Uruguay Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at
the newly redesigned FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other
regions or countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from
within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page (http://www.fita.org).

WORLD BANK ENTERPRISE SURVEYS
Here's a great resource for anyone who's considering doing
business in a country. World Bank Enterprise Surveys (
http://rru.worldbank.org/EnterpriseSurveys/ ) has data from
38,000 surveys done by the World Bank in 68 countries. It has
information about bureaucracy, corruption, the legal system,
finance, infrastructure, taxes, trade, and much more. If you want
information like the average time it takes to clear direct
exports through customs, or the percentage of senior management
time spent dealing with requirements of regulations, this is the
site for you. You can see "snapshots" of each country, with
survey results included, or larger reports in PDF format. You can
also export the information to an Excel spreadsheet.

SINGAPORE TRADENET
I just wrote about Singapore a couple of issues ago, and I don't
normally like to spotlight the same country so soon, but here's a
site that's so useful I could't ignore it. Singapore Tradenet (
http://www.tradenet.gov.sg/trdnet/index_home.jsp ) says it's "the
world's first nationwide trade documentation system that approves
permit applications almost instantaneously". This streamlines the
trade documentation process so that you don't have to waste
valuable time and money submitting paper documents and waiting
for approvals. There's a detailed, easy to understand explanation
of the process on the site, so you can get up to speed quickly.
If you do trade with Singapore, this is a must-visit site.
BBC WORLD CUP
When I was a kid, I knew as much about the game of soccer (that's
football to you fans outside the US) as I knew about snooker or
curling. Which is to say, nothing. My kids have grown up with the
sport, however, and I've become quite a fan myself. If you're one
of the millions of people worldwide who are following the World
Cup, you should visit the BBC World Cup (
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2006/ ) site.
Here you'll find the latest scores, schedules, headlines,
background stories, photos, player ratings, trivia quizzes,
animated highlights of games, a blog, a history of the World Cup,
message boards, and even a video with soccer moves you can
practice.
