Hello International Traders!

Bahrain is a good place to research if you're looking for a stable, cosmopolitan country in the Middle East with a growing economy. Sound interesting? I have a site in this issue that will help you learn about Bahrain. The World Trade Organization can have a big effect on your company if you do international trade, and I have a site in this issue that will help you keep up with proposed WTO regulations. Want cheap flights in Europe? Check out the site I found. Finally, I revisit a site that's still useful -- probably even more so than when I first profiled it!

And don't forget -- if you'd like more information about international trade, go to FITA's Really Useful Links ( http://fita.org/webindex/index.html ), which has a link library of more than 8,000 sites related to international trade.

BAHRAIN -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY

The small island nation of Bahrain had the fastest growing economy in the Arab world as of January 2006, according to the United Nations. It also has the freest economy in the Middle East, according to the 2006 Index of Economic Freedom, published by the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal. Could that be why Michael Jackson moved there? I don't know, but if you want to investigate trade possibilities in the Middle East, here's a good site to visit:

The Bahrain page of the International Business Resource Connection, at the University of Kansas site. Here you'll find a list of links to sites with information about every aspect of Bahrain, including its history and culture, political situation, economy, statistics, travel resources, entry requirements, and much more.

You'll find more resources on Bahrain at the FITA ( http://fita.org/countries/bahrain.html) site. Scroll down the page and you'll find a variety of sources for market research, trade leads, business directories, logistics, government contacts, travel, and financing, to name just a few.

There is plenty of information about countries at the newly redesigned FITA site. To find Mini Portals for regions or countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page ( http://www.fita.org ).

FITA's Global Trade Book Store has some excellent books about doing business in Bahrain. Check out Doing Business With Bahrain and Culture Shock! Bahrain: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette.

NOTIFY U.S.

Here's a site that makes use of the Internet's greatest asset: its speed of communication. Notify U.S. ( http://tsapps.nist.gov/notifyus/data/index/index.cfm ) is a free, Web-based e-mail subscription service that allows you to review and comment on proposed World Trade Organization (WTO) technical regulations that can affect your access to international markets. Once you sign up for this service, from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, you'll get e- mail notifications of drafts or changes to domestic and foreign technical regulations for manufactured products. Each e-mail has a link to the Notify U.S. site, where you can read more information and order complete texts of the regulations for review and comment. Since some of these regulations could have a critical effect on your business, you'll want to keep abreast of what's being proposed -- and Notify U.S. can help you do that.

REENIC

It's been five years since I started writing Really Useful Sites, and I've profiled over 500 Web sites. I've seen a lot of outstanding sites in that time, and a reader recently asked if I could revisit some of the really great ones. That sounded like a good idea to me, so I'm going to do just that -- from time to time, I'll take a second look at a site I profiled in the past, and give you an update on what's going on there. REENIC (Russian and East European Network Information) ( http://inic.utexas.edu/reenic ) is just such a site. I wrote about this gem back in 2003, and it looks even more useful now. There are links to information about 29 countries that were part of the old Soviet Union or Yugoslavia. You'll find information about language, history, culture, current events, economics, law, literature, politics, science & technology, travel, and much more. There are also links to Internet portals and search guides that are specific to these countries. All in all, REENIC is worth a second look!
