Hello International Traders! Germany has one of the world's largest economies, and I've got
sites in this issue that will help you achieve success in the
German market. If you need to find a freight forwarder or customs
broker, I have a site with a database you can search. Also, I
found a site that will help you with the college search process.
Finally, I have a site that has tools and information to help you
eat sensibly and maintain a healthy body weight. And don't forget -- if you'd like more information about
international trade, go to FITA's Really Useful Links (
http://fita.org/webindex/index.html ), which has a link library
of more than 8,000 sites related to international trade.
| GERMANY -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY
Germany's economy is Europe's largest, and it's number five on
the list of world economies. It's an affluent and technologically
powerful country, and in 2005 it ranked only behind the United
States and the European Union in dollar amount of imports.
If you'd like to learn more about trade with this thriving
country, a good site to visit is the Federal Statistical Office
of Germany ( http://www.destatis.de/e_home.htm ). This well-
organized site, in English and German, has facts and figures.
Click on the categories in the left column (Education,
Employment, Industry, Foreign Trade, Prices, Wages & Salaries,
etc.) and you can look at tables and graphs with statistical
information. You can also see statistical time series by topic,
and economic indicators.
And if you decide to do business in Germany, pay a visit to
German Business Etiquette Tips (
http://www.german-business-etiquette.com ). It has all the
information you need to avoid mistakes (see "10 Blunders You
Should Avoid"), and make the best impression.
Another good resource is the Germany Mini Portal (
http://fita.org/countries/germany.html ), one of the new features
at the FITA site. The Mini Portal is a good place to start your
research. There is information about the language, currency,
climate, etc., plus more specific information about the economy,
German markets, taxes, news, labor market indicators, tips on
doing business, and a search engine to help you find market
research on the Internet.
Click on "Useful Links" and you'll find a variety of sources for
market research, trade leads, business directories, logistics,
government contacts, travel, financing, and lots more.
The Germany Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at the
newly redesigned FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other
regions or countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from
within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page (
http://www.fita.org ).
FITA's Global Trade Book Store has some excellent books about doing
business in the Germany. Check out Doing Business With Germany and Succeed in Business with Germany. And 10 chapters of the German American Chamber of Commerce are FITA member associations. Click here to search the FITA Member Directory for links to their websites. Their sites
offer more resources about doing business with Germany.

NATIONAL CUSTOMS BROKERS & FORWARDERS ASSOCIATION
Freight Forwarders and Customs Brokers play a vital role in
transporting goods overseas, and they can save traders time and
money by cutting through red tape, finding the quickest and most
cost-effective way to transport goods, complying with regulations
in a timely manner, and a myriad of other valuable services. You
can search for a licensed customs broker or freight forwarder at
the website of FITA member National Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association of America
( http://www.ncbfaa.org ). Click on "Find a Broker/Forwarder"
and you'll be able to search the NCBFAA membership directory.
Also, you can find many links related to shipping and
international trade by clicking on "Useful Links."

COLLEGE SEARCH ENGINES AND MORE
I'm going through the college search maze with my daughter now,
and it's quite an experience. Finding the right college or
university out of the thousands available -- and then getting her
into it, and paying for it -- seems a daunting task indeed. I
think I'll be visiting College Search Engines and More (
http://www.college-search-engines-and-more.com ) a lot. This
site has resources to help bewildered parents and overwhelmed
students decide on a course of study, search for a college,
locate financial aid and scholarships, negotiate the admissions
process, learn about things like housing options and social
activities on campus, and much more.
CALORIE CONTROL COUNCIL
For much of my life I was blessed with the body of a long
distance runner -- skinny, to be exact. That ended when I hit
middle age and noticed the waistbands of my pants were getting
tighter. Now, like most people, I have to watch what I eat.
That's why I'll probably be paying more visits to the Calorie
Control Council ( http://www.caloriecontrol.org ). This site has
plenty of information to help you eat right. There are calorie
counters to help you keep track of what you're eating, and an
exercise calculator to show you how much exercise you need to
burn off that bowl of ice cream you had for dessert. There's also
a body mass calculator, and a healthy weight calculator, among
others. You'll also find a guide to weight loss, news and studies
about food and weight issues, and plenty of articles to show you
how to maintain healthier eating habits.
