Hello International Traders! Tunisia is a stable country in Africa with a high standard of
living, and I've got a site in this issue to help you find
opportunities there. Wondering about the new U.S. air travel
security restrictions? I found the official site that tells you
exactly what you can and cannot bring on an airplane. If you need
information about anything to do with Asia, check out the Asian
Internet portal I profile in this issue. Finally, I have a site
that will keep you abreast of the latest diplomatic issues
worldwide.
| TUNISIA -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY
Tunisia is a moderate Arab state that is politically stable, with
a diverse economy that has produced one of the highest standards
of living on the African continent. Its exports reached US $10
billion in 2005, while imports were US $13 billion.
If this sounds attractive to you as a market for international
trade and you'd like to learn more, go to the U.S. Commercial
Service Market Research Library (
http://www.buyusainfo.net/adsearch.cfm?search_type=int&loadnav=no
), select Tunisia for your country, and click on "Go". At the
next page, click on the description of the Country Commercial
Guide to Tunisia. This guide, which is in PDF format, has
chapters on: doing business in Tunisia; the political and
economic environment; leading sectors for U.S. export and
investment; trade regulations & standards; trade & project
financing; business financing; and much more. The Country
Commercial Guide focuses on U.S. companies, but a business from
any country will find useful information here.
Another good resource is the Tunisia Mini Portal (
http://fita.org/countries/tunisia.html), one of the new features
at the FITA site. The Mini Portal is a good place to start your
research. There is information about the language, currency,
climate, etc., plus more specific information about the economy,
Tunisian markets, taxes, news, labor market indicators, tips on
doing business, and a search engine to help you find market
research on the Internet.
Click on "Useful Links" and you'll find a variety of sources for
market research, trade leads, business directories, logistics,
government contacts, travel, financing, and lots more.
The Tunisia Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at the
newly redesigned FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other
regions or countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from
within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page (
http://www.fita.org/ ).

OUR TRAVEL ASSISTANT
With the recent news about the terrorist plot to blow up multiple
airplanes, security has been tightened for air travel to and from
the United States. At Our Travel Assistant (
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/new-procedures.shtm ), the U.S. Transportation Security
Administration has all the details about what you can and cannot
take on an airplane. The site also has information for travelers
with disabilities and medical conditions, those who need to
transport special items (e.g., alcoholic beverages, firearms &
ammunition, lighters & matches, medications, sporting equipment,
etc.) , and traveling with children. There is also security
information about traveling by passenger rail, sea, car, and mass
transit.

PORTAL TO ASIAN INTERNET RESOURCES
I like to revisit useful sites from time to time, to see if
they've improved or changed in any way. The Portal to Asian
Internet Resources (PAIR) (
http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/PAIR/ ) looks like it's gotten
bigger, faster, and easier to use since I wrote about it in 2004.
This project, put together by area studies scholars,
bibliographers and subject experts based at the libraries of the
University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota and Ohio
State University, has 6,000 annotated links to resources on
dozens of Asian countries. There are many ways to use the site --
you can click on a category (Economy, Education, History,
Politics, Science, etc.) at the home page, do a keyword search,
click on a country on the map, browse featured resources, or do a
guided search. Whatever method you choose, you'll find links to
high quality information about Asian countries.
DIPLOMACY MONITOR
Diplomatic relations between countries can have a trickle-down
effect on businesses and individuals, so it's not a bad idea to
stay on top of what's happening in the diplomatic sphere.
Diplomacy Monitor (
http://www.diplomacymonitor.com ) is a
great way to do that. This site has news items and links to
documents about the latest diplomatic happenings. You can browse
the latest news items, stay up on the major active issues, read
items relevant to specific categories (Human Rights,
Commerce/Trade), and scan documents by region, issue, or country,
to name just a few ways you can use this site. To give just one
example of what you'll find at this site -- a story describing
how China has shut down over 100 Web sites since July for
copyright violations.
