Hello International Traders!

Greetings from John McDonnell, here with more sites to help you succeed in global trade.

China's economic engine is still going full throttle, and I have a site in this issue that will help you climb on board the train. Also, I found a site that has reliable, updated business research you can depend on. Do you import into the U.S.? You can find gems of useful information in the U.S. Customs Rulings Database. Finally, I have a site that will calculate your gas cost for trips within the U.S.

And don't forget -- if you'd like more information about international trade, go to FITA's Really Useful Links ( http://fita.org/webindex/ ), which has a link library of more than 8,000 sites related to international trade.

CHINA
Our Featured Country

Measured on a purchasing power parity (PPP) basis, China in 2007 was the second-largest economy in the world after the U.S. Its GDP increased tenfold since 1978, and its double-digit growth is expected to continue. China has been a remarkable success story, and if you want to research opportunities with this growing market, go to Greater China Business (http://www.atimes.com/atimes/China_Business.html). This is a section of the Asia Times Online site, and it has lots of useful information about China, including insightful articles and reports about the Chinese economy. There's also an interactive map of China with all its provinces: you can click on a province to get a complete statistical snapshot of it. Scroll down to "Industry Surveys" on the home page and you can read dozens of up-to-date articles and reports about Chinese industries. In addition, there are many links to useful Web sites about China here.

You'll also find plenty of good research at the China Mini Portal ( http://fita.org/countries/chinaportal.html ), a feature of the FITA Web site. The China Mini Portal has an overview of China, with facts about the language, currency, climate, etc., plus more specific information about the economy, markets, taxes, labor market indicators, and tips on doing business in China.

Click on "Useful Links" and you'll find a variety of sources for market research, trade leads, business directories, logistics, government contacts, travel, financing, and lots more.

The China Mini Portal is one of many research gateways at the FITA site. To find Mini Portals for other regions or countries, just click on "Country Profiles" from within a Mini Portal, or at the FITA home page ( http://www.fita.org ).

The following organizations are FITA member associations. Their sites offer more resources about doing business with China:

FOR RELIABLE INFORMATION, BOOKMARK VIBES
Good Links

Anyone who has anything to do with international trade should have a collection of useful Web sites bookmarked for future reference. One site that should be part of that bookmark list is Virtual International Business & Economic Sources (VIBES) ( http://library.uncc.edu/vibes ). This site has been around for almost 15 years, which is a long time in Web years. Maintained by Jeanie M. Welch at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, VIBES has links that are useful, free, and on target. You won't find any broken or dead links here: everything has been checked for accuracy and usefulness. To get a look at all the links, click on "Comprehensive" in the left column, and you'll see a list of categories (Banking & Finance, Emerging Markets, International Statistics, Portals, etc.) that you can explore. There's also a list of sites devoted to specific regions of the world, and an alphabetical list of sites devoted to countries.

SEARCH THE U.S. CUSTOMS RULINGS DATABASE
Up-to-date Customs Rulings

Anyone who imports into the U.S. will find this next site valuable. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency's Customs Rulings Online Search System (CROSS) (http://rulings.cbp.gov) is a searchable database of over 152,000 rulings made by the CBP since 1989. The CBP oversees millions of shipments that come into the U.S. every day, and they deal with issues relating to smuggling, illegal aliens, and terrorists, among other things. If you import products into the U.S., there may be a ruling that you should be aware of, and you can search for it here. At this site you can also find links to the Harmonized Tariff schedule, Customs Bulletins, Informed Compliance, Code of Federal Regulations, and the Customs Valuation Encyclopedia.

HERE'S HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR GAS COST
How Much does it Cost to Drive to Work?

With the cost of fuel breaking records in the last year, sites like Cost To Drive ( http://www.costtodrive.com ) are becoming more essential for drivers. At this site you enter a starting point and a destination, plus the make, model, and year of the car you're driving, and you'll get a calculation of how much money the trip will cost you in gas. Another nifty feature is that you'll get a map of your trip from Mapquest, Yahoo Maps, and Google Maps. The site only works for trips in the U.S., but it's a valuable tool for anyone taking an auto trip in this era of high-priced gas.
