Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia:
Potential Markets in Africa
A few days ago a delegation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce returned from the African countries of Ghana, Kenya and Ethiopia. This visit was done as part of the Chamber’s African Business Initiative, whose missions are to promote U.S. companies' direct investments in Africa, engage the U.S. business community on legislative policies that foster foreign direct investment in Africa, facilitate trade between the United States and African countries and introduce U.S. companies to the continent's vast economic opportunities. |

Upon their return, the delegation reported about the many investment opportunities that exist in these countries, especially in the areas of infrastructure and energy. Indeed, the Kenyan and Ethiopian governments have identified these two areas as priorities for their economies in 2011 in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and improve the strength of middle-income countries. For its part, Ghana, in recent years, made significant efforts to streamline investment procedures and now offers tax incentives, particularly in the oil sector.
Ghana, Kenya and Ethiopia, which represent a market of nearly 150 million people, have had several years of good economic performance (more than 5% of GDP on average). They have signed preliminary agreements with the IMF aimed at preserving economic stability and improving the business climate, controlling inflation, raising currency reserves by liberalizing trade and developing the financial system.
