MOROCCO
Some protests but still stable
Like the other countries in North Africa, Morocco is feeling the winds of political reform. Unlike its neighbors, however, the people of the country still revere their leader, the King. There is, however, a large youth movement, connected by Facebook and other social media, that is demonstrating for political and social reform. The New York Times has an interesting video made "inside the movement". Take a look.
In spite of the social unrest, the Kingdom of Morocco‘s economy remains strong and there are many opportunities for trade with the country.

Casablanca, the economic capital |
|
The U.S. Department of Commerce recently released figures for trade between the U.S. and Morocco. The results are very encouraging. In 2010, trade between the two countries reached more than $2.6 billion, an increase of almost 25% in one year. U.S. food and agricultural exports to Morocco totaled a record $ 766 million, an increase of 50% compared to 2009. The United States thus became the 7th largest supplier of agricultural products and food to Morocco. Morocco's exports to the United States, meanwhile, reached $685 million in 2010.
The two countries signed a free trade agreement in 2004. Morocco, a market of 30 million inhabitants, is the only African country with which the U.S. has signed a free trade agreement. The Moroccan economy has been doing well for several years because of macroeconomic stability and low inflation. In 2010, the country’s GDP grew 4%.
The Kingdom wants to diversify its economy because it remains highly dependent on agriculture. It seeks to attract more African and Western companies to establish ventures in the country. With this in mind, the U.S. Commercial Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce is sponsoring a trade mission to Morocco from April 30 to May 1. It will bring together more than twenty companies from sectors as diverse as energy, logistics, port security and infrastructure construction. Although the deadline for registration has passed, there still may be last-minute spots available.
