Spain
Strength in Spite of Problems
www.doingbusinessinspain.org
Spain has been hit hard by the economic and financial crisis, with a contraction in GDP of about -3.7% in 2009 and only 0.1% growth in 2010 and an unemployment rate of nearly 20%. However, the outlook is not all bleak. Spain is still the 9th largest economy in the world, with average growth much higher than the EU. And in 2009 it was the 7th largest target for foreign direct investment in the world in spite of the crisis. The United States is the 4th largest investor in the country. Take a look at Invest in Spain for more information about FDI in Spain.

The Spanish banking system has remained relatively strong during the crisis. On May 23 the Spain - Latin American Forum on International Banking, organized jointly by the International Bankers Association of Florida - FIBA, the Federation of Latin American Banks - FELABAN and the Spanish Association of Banks - AEB will be held in Madrid, Spain. This event will be an opportunity to discuss issues of increased coordination between the U.S. banking community, Spain and Latin American.
With a 22% increase in net income for the year 2010, Banco Santander the largest Spanish bank, the largest bank in the Eurozone and one of the largest banks in the world in terms of market capitalization, is one of the architects of the country's economic recovery. Santander, which seems to have been less exposed to the economic crisis, has over the past two years bought several foreign banks in Europe, North and South America.

World Trade Month
Expand into the global market and defend American competitiveness
www.trade.gov/worldtrademonth
Since the 1920’s, May has been recognized in the U.S. as World Trade Month. It is a period where business associations throughout the U.S. hold seminars and networking events celebrating the importance of integration trade to the U.S. and world economies. During the 2011 World Trade Month, along with the trade programs and events taking place the entire month, President Obama’s Trade Promotion Coordinating Committee (TPCC), comprised of 18 federal trade promotion agencies including the U.S. Department of Commerce, will transmit the 2011 National Export Strategy (NES) to the U.S. Congress.
Although trade programs and events will take place during the entire month, World Trade Week (May 16-22) is the period with the most number of events. Participate to expand your network, talk about today’s economic challenges, turn them into tomorrow’s opportunities and learn from companies that are successfully doing business in foreign markets.
The largest World Trade Month events are being held this year in: New York,
Los Angeles, Miami, Oregon.
