The US-Turkey Economic and Commercial Cooperation
www.the-atc.org
On September 19 the first meeting of Turkey-US Business Council took place in Istanbul. This council, established under the US-Turkey Strategic Framework for Economic and Commercial Cooperation is dedicated to the promotion of trade between the two countries, particularly in the fields of defense, technology and culture. It will allow the private sectors of both countries to meet once a year to provide their governments with recommendations on ways to strengthen bilateral economic relations, trade and investment.

Through this initiative, Turkey in recent years has become a prime target for U.S. exporters and investors. In 2010, bilateral trade between the U.S. and Turkey was 15 billion USD. In 2011, it is expected to exceed USD 20 billion. It must be said that the Turkish economy is growing: it grew almost 9% in 2010, and observers expect growth of around 6.6% in 2011. The U.S., meanwhile, will show growth of about 1.5% in 2011. Turkey is therefore a prime market for U.S. exporters, particularly in the chemistry /plastics, energy, food processing, packaging and ICT (Information Technology and Communication) industries.
Turkey is one of the top target markets of the National Export Initiative (NEI), which aims to create jobs in the United States through the promotion of exports. In 2010, 3.3% of Turkey’s exports went to the United States while 6.6% of Turkey’s imports came from the United States, making it the seventh-largest market and the fourth-largest supplier to Turkey.

We’ve Got Brazil Covered
China has roared past the US to become Brazil’s top trade partner, but the US is still the top exporter to the Latin American giant. The Datamyne blog has been covering Brazil: In first half 2011, Brazil’s purchases of US goods totaled $15.7 billion, while its exports to the US totaled $11.7 billion, giving the US a $4 billion surplus, according to Datamyne statistics. What Brazil Is Buying from the US may surprise. Refined oil, coal and turbojets top the list in the first half of this year but there were stunning increases in cotton and ethanol, enough to vault these commodities from out of nowhere to 4th and 5th (take a look at Charts and Graphs).
|
But is Trade Trouble Brewing between Brazil and the US? A new US farm bill would bar the transfer of $147 million in compensation to Brazilian cotton farmers, as called for in the 2010 agreement that settled a long-running trade dispute between the two countries.
Brazil is one of 17 Latin American markets covered by Datamyne’s trade database. You can use this data to uncover opportunities for your business.

REALLY USEFUL SITES

Dgmarket
Tenders and procurement opportunities worldwide
www.dgmarket.com
In past issues we have featured several websites that offer government procurement opportunities. These have included CWCTenders (for construction and engineering contracts) , Tenders Europe Daily and WINNINGTENDERS.EU (both for European Union tenders). But it seems that we have forgotten to discuss what is probably the largest international portal for tenders and procurement opportunities: DGmarket. It is the biggest because it compiles tenders from governments and international organizations worldwide and for all industries. Access to full versions of the tenders is fee-based, but the search engine and the number of tenders listed could make it a worthwhile investment. You can browse by country or by industry.
