United Kingdom

British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has recently called for the establishment of a free trade agreement between the U.S. and the EU. This agreement would, he said, strengthen the transatlantic trade between trading blocs weakened in recent months, particularly because of the sovereign debt crisis in Europe and the recession in the United States.
The UK holds a special place in the European Union. Although it is a full member, it differs in several respects: firstly the country has decided to keep its own currency instead of adapting the euro; secondly, it has always been very critical about the issue of the Common Agricultural Policy; finally, the UK has decided to stay out of the new EU treaty on the reform of European institutions.

The UK also has a special relationship with the United States, based on a shared history, language and, to some extent, culture. The US is the UK’s largest export market (over 14% of British exports) and the third-largest supplier (9% of total imports). The UK is the fifth-largest import market for the United States, with about 4% of total U.S. exports (and the largest European market for the United States) and the sixth- largest supplier (2.6 % of total US imports). The UK exports each year more than 150 billion USD of services (mainly financial) to the United States.
In 2010-2011, the United States was the largest foreign investor in the UK, with over 24% of total FDI in the country, far ahead of the Netherlands (17%) or France (11%). As a world-class financial center, London remains the top destination for U.S. companies in Europe. In addition, opportunities during the Olympic Games 2012 in the British capital have attracted extensive investment from U.S. companies
