Singapore
A Hub for American Trade Companies in Asia
More than a hundred U.S. companies went to Singapore from May 14 to 22 for a trade mission organized by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The objective of this event was to help companies increase their exports to this region, by allowing them to better understand the market and meet local business partners. For the U.S. State Department, this project is part of the program by President Obama to create jobs in the United States by promoting export growth. The goal is to double the total value of U.S. exports by 2014, to bring them from $1,500 billion (USD) in 2009 to nearly $3,000 billion. |

To do so, the U.S. wants to help companies to not only penetrate new markets, but also ensure that U.S. companies enjoy the best conditions to do business in the region by removing trade barriers: high tariffs, non-tariff barriers, lack of transparency of procedures and regulations, respect for intellectual property, harmonization of norms and standards, etc.
Today, U.S. exports to Asia-Pacific market makes up nearly 60% of its total exports. Singapore has an important place in this region as the country attracts nearly 2.5% of U.S. exports. The country has become the 10th customer of the United States. The main products exported by the United States to Singapore include petroleum products, equipment for civil aviation, semiconductors, industrial machinery, measuring instruments and computer equipment. The United States is the fifth largest customer of Singapore’s exports (6.5%) and its second largest supplier (11.5% of its imports).
Singapore and the U.S. signed a free trade agreement on the 1 January 2004
