Moving Towards a US-India Bilateral Investment Treaty
In 2011, trade between the U.S. and India reached nearly 60 billion USD, which makes India the sixteenth customer of the United States (with 1.5% of exports) and its thirteenth supplier (1.6% of U.S. imports). It is in this context that Washington has recently advocated the signing of a bilateral investment treaty with New Delhi, a treaty that would open the way for the establishment of a free trade treaty in the next five years. Trade relations between India and the United States have greatly increased under the Obama administration, the latter having made export growth a cornerstone of its economic policy. Indeed, U.S. exports to India have doubled between 2006 and 2011.

Among the main products exported there are chemical fertilizers, industrial engines, telecommunications equipment, medical equipment, wine and agricultural products.
Despite the fact that India has recently decided not to buy F-16 fighters and F-18s, the defense remains a priority sector for trade relations between the two countries. The U.S. Secretary of State for Defense recently said that India and the United States producing military equipment in partnership is a positive way for the U.S. to approach the largest importer of weapons in the world.
