Taiwan to resume Trade Talks with U.S
In the particularly grim context of the current global economy, the Taiwanese business development strategy has been focusing on the signing of bilateral free-trade treaties and investment agreements.
The island has therefore put an end to a trade dispute with the United States, which lasted for five years, after Taiwan had decided to ban imports of American beef containing ractopamine, a drug used as a food additive. This decision had blocked the previously initiated discussions on the setting up of a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) with the United States. |

Following Taiwan's decision to allow these imports, trade negotiations are expected to resume, not only with the United States but also with Taiwan’s other partners, including the members of the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (TPP), which Taiwan wishes to join.
Relations with the United States are important to Taiwan because the island aims to become the financial centre of the entire Pacific region. This requires being able to mobilize foreign investment, including funds from Americans investors. Structurally, the country is highly exposed to the global economic cycle. This is why the new government, in power since January 2012, considers regional economic integration as a priority for the present mandate.
In 2011, Taiwan was the tenth largest trading partner of the United States, with over 41.4 billion USD of Taiwanese goods imported by the U.S. and 25.9 billion exported. The U.S. therefore had a deficit of 15.5 billion USD with Taiwan.
