|
According to the US Department of Commerce, trade between the United States and Mexico is still growing rapidly. It reached a record high of US $461 billion in 2011, which is an increase of 17% compared to 2010. Compared to the same period in 2011, American exports to Mexico show an increase of 11% in the first 7 months of 2012 (January to July), and imports show an increase of 9%. In 2011, Mexico was the United State's second buyer (13.3% of total exports) and its third supplier (11.7% of total imports).
These positive results are due primarily to the establishment of the North American free trade agreement, which has made it possible to waive custom duties on most of the goods being traded between the United States, Mexico and Canada. But Mexico's good economic health should also be factored in, especially the expansion of the Mexican middle class, which consumes a number of American-manufactured products and the high rate of growth of the GDP (4% versus 1.7% in the U.S. in 2011).
There are numerous business opportunities in the area of infrastructures, as the Mexican State is investing in ports, airports, railway and highways. The aerospace industry is also significant, with more than 260 aerospace companies operating in Mexico and plans to expand their exports from current USD 4.3 billion per year to USD 12 billion by 2020.
