OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: Morocco
|
Last December, the United States and Morocco signed new agreements that should allow stimulation of international trade between the two countries. Among the main measures, we can list: The implementation of new, more transparent, customs standards especially electronic payment of customs duties, taxes and charges applied to products when they enter the market; The finalization of an agreement for the promotion of investments, with the assurance of the United States that they will continue their investments in Morocco (which exceeded 350 million USD in 2011) and the Moroccan government's commitment to maintain a political environment that promotes and encourages international investment, especially in the field of investor protection; A joint statement for the free flow of information in the field of ICT (Information and Communication Technology).
These new agreements are part of a Free Trade Agreement that came into force on January 1st 2006. Since the signing of this agreement, U.S. exports to Morocco increased by 336% and imports increased by 190%. The United States are currently Morocco’s 6th largest client (with a market share of 3,8% of Morocco’s total exports) and its 4th largest supplier (with a market share of 7% of Morocco’s total imports). The trade balance of the United States with Morocco in 2011 showed a surplus of 1.8 billion USD.
Under the Trade and Investment Partnership Initiative in the Middle East and North Africa, Morocco is seen as a key strategic partner for the United States. Indeed, the Moroccan economy is doing well, characterized by macroeconomic stability, coupled with low inflation and a relatively strong economic growth (+3% in 2012). Furthermore, implementation of social measures by the Moroccan government (for instance in favor of equality in the areas of access to education, health and housing) has allowed the country to avoid an increase in the popular protest movement that started in 2011.
