OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: Brazil
Last week, the U.S. Secretary of State for Trade went to Brazil for a business development mission for the infrastructure sector. She was accompanied by twenty representatives of American companies who were able to meet their Brazilian counterparts, Members of the Federation of Industries of Sao Paulo (FIESP - a Brazilian industrial association which includes more than 130,000 companies) and discuss with them the possible different areas of collaboration.

The issue of infrastructure development is crucial for Brazil, which is about to host the football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. Indeed, airports, ports, roads and Brazilian rail transportation need a complete renovation and extension work to deal with the increased traffic. This is why the Brazilian government has, in recent months, initiated measures to open up the construction of major projects to private and foreign capital. Many projects could be a collaboration between Brazilian and U.S. companies: construction of the Rio-São Paulo line, subway and Sao Paulo commuter trains, tramway, wind development, waste and wastewater management... Opportunities exist in the construction sector because to organize the upcoming sporting events in the best possible way, the country needs to build new stadiums, to expand and improve its hotels. Brazil, which also suffers from a technological gap in the energy and environmental sector, is also looking for foreign partners to develop this sector.

Today, Brazil is the United States’ seventh client. It imports 2.8% of the United States’ total exports of merchandise. In 2012, the United States exported more than 43 billion USD of products to Brazil, a 23% increase compared to 2010. As for imports, they totaled 32 billion USD in the same year (a 33% increase compared to 2010). On the 9th of March 2011, President Obama signed an Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation with his Brazilian counterpart to strengthen economic cooperation between these two giants of the American continent.
