OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: India
The meeting between American President Barak Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to take place in Washington on September 27, 2013. It should be an opportunity for the two leaders to take the next steps in relations to area of trade, cooperation, development and investment. This summit is the third meeting between the two leaders over the past four years. There should be question to the implantation of the agreement in field of civil nuclear which was signed 5 years ago, almost to the day, between the two countries.

In order to be better prepared for the meeting, Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited India this past June and July, demonstrating that the relationship with India is not only a commercial partnership for the United States but also a strategic one. In 2012, India became the 10th supplier to the United States, accounting for 1.8% of total U.S. imports while strategically the geopolitical location of the region is proving helpful with the political uncertainty in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The defense industry is also one of the pillars of economic and trade relations between the two countries. In 2012, the sector achieved a turnover of about 8 billion USD. India is now the world’s largest buyer of military equipment which in turn leaves significant business opportunities for American entrepreneurs. The U.S. government recently announced that funds would be available to companies that develop partnerships with Indian counterparts in the defense sector.

Additional focal points of trade relations between the two countries focus on Agriculture (India produces 100 billion euro of agricultural products annually), air transport (with more than 100 million travelers each year), biotechnology (sector grew by over 30% in recent years), construction (6 million new homes are built each year in India), infrastructure, information technology and communication (employing nearly 10 million people in the country) and the health sector (India has over 15,000 hospitals).
