OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: United Arab Emirates
Trade relations between the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, also known as the GCC (Saudi Arabia , Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Kuwait) and the U.S. have experienced a revival in recent years after a long period of strain due to increased competition from Asia between 1990 and 2010. This resurgence is due to billions of U.S. dollars spent by GCC countries on infrastructure projects. According to the latest statistics, the main imports from these countries include machinery, equipment and expertise in the field of construction. Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the UAE, will host the 2020 World Expo. It should boost the UAE’s economy, which will benefit from an estimated USD 6.9 billion earmarked for infrastructure projects around the event.

The United Arab Emirates has become the third largest trading hub in the world after Hong Kong and Singapore. Within the first 11 months of 2013 alone, trade between the GCC and the U.S. amounted to $111 billion USD with the U.S. exporting $48 billions of goods to the GCC and the GCC exporting $63 billion in products to the U.S. Between 2011-2012 trade flows between the U.S. and the GCC increased by 24%, with export to the GCC countries up by 31% and imports from the GCC up by 20%. In 2012, the U.S. was the main supplier to Qatar, the second largest supplier to Saudi Arabia, the third supplier to the United Arab Emirates, the fourth to Bahrain and the seventh to Oman and Kuwait.

The U.S. has signed free trade agreements with Bahrain and Qatar in 2006, and Oman in 2009. The U.S. has also signed agreements on Trade and Investment with Saudi Arabia in 2003, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates in 2004.
