OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: Nigeria
The recent US-Africa Leaders Summit, held in Washington from August 4 to 6, 2014, was an opportunity for the American government to reinforce its commitment to deepen trade relations with African countries. Unlike western economies, economic growth was strong in Africa over the past decade, with an average of 5% per year. A number of countries, including Nigeria, have undertaken major economic reforms to improve market access and the performance of the private sector.

However, trade between the United States and African countries has decreased in recent years, from $125 billion in 2010 to $85 billion in 2013, a decrease of over 47%! Over the same period, by comparison, China has seen trade with African countries increase from $166 billion in 2011 to $210 billion in 2013 (26.5% increase).

Nigeria is a prime gateway for penetrating the African market. The country is not only the largest African economy but is also a commercial hub for all of West Africa. For companies wishing to locate in the area, a market of over 400 million people, Nigeria can be a base thanks to its openness towards the market economy and private sector development and its policy of protecting foreign investment. The country offers many business opportunities, particularly in the service sector (which is the main sector of the country in terms of contribution to GDP), agribusiness and infrastructure.

In 2013, the United States exported $6.4 billion worth of goods and imported $11.7 billion of products from Nigeria. American exports to Nigeria have increased by 30% between 2011 and 2013.

The Obama administration has committed to invest nearly $33 billion in Africa over the next few years. Nigeria, with its large network of SMEs offers many opportunities to create new partnerships with American companies wishing to expand into new markets.
