OUR FEATURED COUNTRY: Turkey
|
Last month, the United States and the European Union began to prepare the ground for the start of negotiations to establish a Transatlantic Partnership for trade and investment. Ultimately, this agreement would create the largest integrated market in the world, bringing together half of the global GDP and 30% of the world trade. Turkey, which has been deeply integrated in the common European market since the establishment of a customs union in 1996, and has begun negotiations for its accession to the EU, is concerned about this situation. Indeed, the country would face the arrival of products that would enter the European market duty free, many of which are in direct competition with Turkish exports.
It is in this sense that the Turkish Prime Minister announced that he will meet with President Obama on May 15, to try to form a working group for the establishment of a free trade agreement with the United States. In 2012, the United States exported nearly 12.5 billion USD of goods (two times more than in 2007) and imported nearly 6.3 billion USD. The U.S. trade balance with Turkey therefore posted a net surplus of nearly 6.2 billion USD. Turkey has therefore become the 20th largest export market in the world for U.S. goods and the 10th if we only take into account the exports of agricultural products. Among the main products exported to Turkey, there are planes, iron and steel, petroleum, cotton yarn and fabrics. Among the main Turkish products imported by the United States, there are cars, machinery, stone, plaster and cement. The number of American companies investing in Turkey has more than doubled between 2007 and 2012, to reach 1,200. Indeed, many American companies see Turkey as a springboard to markets in Africa and the Middle East.
The signing of a free trade agreement with the United States would allow Turkey to offset the trade deficit that could arise from the signing of the Transatlantic Partnership for trade and investment.
